Public Consultation Period - Strategic Integrated Framework Plan for the Shannon Estuary

The Strategic Integrated Framework Plan (SIFP) for the Shannon Estuary is an inter-jurisdictional land and marine based framework plan to guide the future development and management of the Shannon Estuary.  It has been commissioned by Clare County Council, Kerry County Council, Limerick City and County Councils, Shannon Development, the Mid-West Regional Authority and the Shannon Foynes Port  Company.  The project is being overseen by a multi-agency steering group comprised of the above and other key stakeholders with an interest in the Estuary.
 
A DRAFT Inter Jurisdictional Strategic Integrated Framework Plan (SIFP) for the Shannon Estuary has now been published and is available to download from this website along with details of how to make a submission or observation before the closing date of 4.00 p.m. 15th February 2013.

November 2012

Fáilte Ireland has been working with the Mid-West Regional Authority, and other stakeholders, to develop Ireland’s first long-distance driving route for tourists along the western seaboard – The Wild Atlantic Way.  The Wild Atlantic Way is set to be Ireland's first long distance tourist route which will stretch for about 1,400km from Donegal to West Cork.

Over the past three months a range of route options have been examined and a preferred route has now been identified. Before the project can progress any further it is crucial that you have an opportunity to submit your views and ideas on the preferred route. The route can currently be viewed on Fáilte Ireland’s website and at local tourist information offices.

Conference: E-Inclusion and Digital Public Services

The DIEGO Project Partners have finalised the Programme for the DIEGO Final Conference which will be held in Corpus Christi College in Cambridge, U.K. on 25th September 2012. A representative from the Irish Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will present the current situation with regard to promoting e-Inclusion in Ireland.

The Mid-West Regional Authority, in conjunction with the Mid-West branch of the Irish Planners Institute, hosted a workshop on 20th June to provide members of the Region's planning authorities with information on the national spatial planning web-viewer www.myplan.ie. Mr. Bruce McCormack (Department of Environment, Community and Local Government), the Project Manager for myplan.ie, presented a demonstration of the tool to attendees at the workshop and gave information on the next steps for future development of the tool.

The Mid-West Regional Authority attended the 6th meeting of the International Steering Committee for the FRESH project in the Veneto Region of Italy on the 23rd and 24th of May 2012. At the meeting, the MWRA presented the way forward for ensuring that the lessons learned through the FRESH project are integrated into regional development policies.

The Mid-West Regional Authority attended the kick-off partner meeting and conference for the STEP project in Pécs, Hungary on the 7th and 8th May 2012. The MWRA presented the situation in the Mid-West region in relation to implementing local sustainable energy policies. Experts from Hungary and Germany also presented the current situation in their regions and the Tipperary Energy Agency presented the progress made by North Tipperary County Council in making energy savings of 33%.

The Mid-West Regional Authority hosted the most recent International meeting of the Weastflows project partners in Limerick from 2nd to 4th May 2012. Partners from other regions in North West Europe travelled to the meeting in Limerick where they discussed progress on the project and in particular the development of the Sustainable Gateways reference guide.

The Mid-West Regional Authority and Limerick City Council co-hosted a DIEGO seminar in Limerick on the 26th April 2012. The seminar was held in the Clarion Hotel, Steamboat Quay, Limerick City and it presented the results of the DIEGO pilot in Limerick as well as a discussion of national and local Digital Inclusion policies.

Mid-West Regional Authority provided funding, via the NEA2 project, for the development of a Smartphone App to guide visitors and tourists around the trails in the Lough Derg area. The App, which is available to download for free by iPhone and Android users, was launched by the Lough Derg Marketing Strategy Group.

Mid-West Regional Authority signs contract with Cunnane Stratton Reynolds to develop a new strategy document for the Mid-West Region aimed at guiding the sustainable development and management of urban parks and green areas. This initiative is being undertaken by the Regional Authority as part of the Park Atlantic project which is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the Interreg IVB Atlantic Area programme.

STEP - Improving Communities' Sustainable Energy Policy Tools - a new project approved by the E.U. Interreg IVC Programme.

The Mid-West Regional Authority, in partnership with the Midlands Regional Authority, will be working on this new project which will be launched in early 2012. Other partners in the STEP project are from Hungary, Finland, Spain, Poland and Germany.

TRAP - Territories of Rivers Action Plans - a new EU project approved by the E.U. Interreg IVC Programme.

The Mid-West Regional Authority, along with the South-West Regional Authority and Shannon Development, are partners in the project which will be launched in early 2012. Other partners in the TRAP project are from Finland, the UK, Romania, Latvia, Slovenia, Greece and the Netherlands.

The FRESH project was selected to present one of the project's good practices at the Interreg IVC Good Practice Fair in Krakow, Poland. 

FRESH will be presenting during the Energy Efficiency workshop on the 24th November 2011.

The Mid-West Regional Authority attended the 5th meeting of the International Steering Committee for the FRESH project in Lublin, Poland on the 15th and 16th of November 2011. At the meeting, the MWRA presented a number of good practices in the area of sustainable procurement in the construction sector.

The Mid-West Regional Authority, in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, hosted an information seminar for the local planning authorities in the Mid-West Region in Limerick on the 19th October 2011.

The seminar presented the current situation with regard to Strategic Environmental Assessment in Ireland and the experiences of the EPA to date. The seminar presentation is available for download here.

The 4th international seminar of the FRESH project took place in Cork on 5th October 2011 and was officially opened by Mr. Willie Penrose, T.D., Minister for Housing and Planning.

The Mid West Regional Authority attended the DIEGO interim conference entitled "Regional Governments Against the Digital Divide" on 29th September 2011. The seminar was held in the Committee of the Regions in Brussels and it discussed the challenges and opportunities faced by public administrations in meeting the objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe.

Deirdre Byrne, EU Projects Officer with the MWRA, presented FRESH as part of a series of talks for Green Building Week hosted by Irish Green Building Council members. EASCA (The Environmental and Sustainable Construction Association) co-hosted the event and led the discussion. Approximately 20 participants with an interest in developing best practice around sustainable construction and planning attended the talk.

The Mid-West Regional Authority presented the WEASTflows project to the All Ireland Rail Freight Forum meeting.

Representatives from organisations such as Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Port Company, the Port of Cork, Shannon-Foynes Port, the Western Development Commission, the Department of Transport and the National Transport Authority attended the meeting, which was chaired by the Irish Exporters' Association.

Lough Derg ‘Tourism Product Bundling Seminar’

Funding for a ‘Tourism Product Bundling Seminar’ was provided for through the Lough Derg Marketing Strategy Group. Tourism traders from the Lough Derg area were invited to this seminar which enabled likeminded operators to enhance a competitive edge and give Lough Derg greater visibility in the marketplace, leading to increased visitor numbers, longer stays and increased revenue.  The seminar was a great success and the feedback was extremely positive.  The tourism trade operators that attended are working together to package their product and promoting Lough Derg as a desirable destination that delivers a unique experience.
