On 23rd January 2012 the Mid West Regional Authority signed a contract with Cunnane Stratton Reynolds to develop a new strategy document aimed at guiding the sustainable development and public management of urban parks and green areas in the Mid West Region and Atlantic Area. Technical meeting of Parks Atlantic project held in Limerick on Tuesday 20th September 2011:
Project partners from France, Spain and Portugal travelled to Limerick for a one day technical meeting with the Mid West Regional Authority and associated partner to the project Limerick City Council. The objective of the one day meeting was to develop terms of reference for External Expertise to develop an Action Parks Sustainable Management Action Plan for the Parks project. The Mid West Regional Authority is leading on the Action Plan work package and is tasked with launching the tender, and will be the contracting authority for the external expertise. The meeting was held in Limerick City and was followed by a tour of Limerick City Parks and green areas, including the People’s Park and Westfields. The Mayor of Limerick, the Deputy Mayor of Limerick attended the lunch hosted by the Mid West Regional Authority on the day. Technical staff from Limerick City Council Parks Service led the visit to the City Parks and Green areas.
Project Description:
The Mid West Regional Authority is partner to an EU funded project titled “PARKS Atlantic”. This project runs from January 2010-December 2012. Associated Irish partner in this project is Limerick City Council. Other partners from France, Spain and Portugal are involved.
The overall objective of this project is to enhance the inherent value of urban parks in the Atlantic Area and to encourage their contribution for sustainable urban development. The total budget for this project is €232,926 (65% co-financed).
One of the main activities which will be led by the Mid West is the elaboration of a generic ACTION PLAN that can be used by both policy makers and practitioners to improve policies in relation to urban parks planning and management, promote the use of green resources and improve the quality of life in urban areas as well as the quality of the urban landscape and environment.
