NEA2 project to be included on programme at upcoming conference on 'The Marine Economy: A key component of the EU Integrated Strategy for The Atlantic Area' that will take place in Dublin on 7th February 2012. Click here for the conference programme.

Strong Irish delegation attended the first European Marine Leisure conference “Challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the marine leisure sector in the Atlantic Regions” in Brest, France from 26th to 27th October 2011:

The Mid West Regional Authority was pleased to see a strong Irish presence at the conference which was organised as part of the NEA2 project. The Designated manager of the MWRA, the Director of the MWRA and EU projects officer for the NEA2 project attended, as did representatives from the South West Regional Authority, Donegal County Council and the Irish Marine Affairs Attaché to the Irish Permanent Representation in Brussels.

Project partner meeting held in Vilagarcía de Arousa, Spain from 28-29 June, 2011.

Project partners from across the Atlantic Area met in Vilagarcía de Arousa for a two day meeting to discuss progress on project implementation. Partners presented an update of their activities in each of the thematic areas (economy, environment, social) and also continued preparation for the European Conference on Sustainable Marine Leisure, due to take place in Brest, France from 26th to 27th October 2011. Mid West Regional Authority Scheme for Carbon Reduction Support to Watersports Clubs and Organisations

Key objectives are to:

  • Achieve significant, measurable and verifiable CO2 emission saving projects in line with EU objectives.
  • Promote transnational entrepreneurial and innovation networks through water-sports activity.
  • Stimulate economic redevelopment and diversification through developing the endogenous regional potential of the water-sports sector in the Atlantic Area.
  • Promote the economic performance of the water sports sector, whilst ensuring that environmental measures for protection are embedded in the sector.

A primary aim of the NEA2 project is to ensure that water sport activities are accessible to all members of society. Under the Mid-West Regional Authority remit the scheme is open to all water sports organisations and clubs located in the Counties of Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary i.e. Mid-West Region.

All Island Marine Leisure Conference:

An All Island Marine Leisure Tourism Conference: maximising the benefits of the maritime products and natural resources for economic gain and social cohesion will be held in the Ards Borough Council area, Northern Ireland, from Wednesday 8 – Friday 10 June 2011.

Project description:

NEA2 is a follow on project from NEA1 and aims for sustainable development of the marine leisure and watersports industry in the Atlantic Area. A total of 23 partners from 8 regions in the Atlantic Area are involved in the project. These partners include organisations from Ireland, South-West UK, Basse Normandie, Brittany, Pays de la Loire, Galicia, North and Central Portugal and Andalucía.

Project objectives:

NEA2 aims to develop a cutting-edge water sports sector within the Atlantic area through three main action areas: economy, environment and social inclusion.

Project Start Date: 1 January 2009

Project End Date: 31 July 2012
