Visitors to Limerick City will certainly have no problems in finding things to see and things to do. The historic nature of Ireland's third largest city, and indeed the beautiful nature of its environs, provide many areas of interest.  The City Council's aim is to provide a high quality city for it's citizens and visitors. This is achieved in many ways including the promotion of economic development, the creation of a good quality urban environment and the provision of the necessary physical infrastructure to support the city's development. A brief taste of what may be found in Limerick City would include:

  • St Mary’s Cathedral
  • King John’s Castle
  • Angela’s Ashes Tour
  • The Treaty Stone and many more

King John's Castle, Limerick City

Limerick City's most famous monument, the Treaty Stone gets its name from the tradition that The Treaty of Limerick, 03 October 1691, was signed on the stone itself. This tradition dates back at least to 1797, when John Harden of Cork mentions it in his diary, and Dr. Young, Bishop of Limerick, born in the city in 1746, so described it to Dr. Milner, Vicar Apostolic of London, in 1808.

County Limerick is very passionate about rugby, Gaelic football & hurling and soccer. Half the time, it seems like the Irish rugby league is nothing but a Limerick derby! You may have heard of Garryowen, Young Munster, Shannon and Old Crescent who are the big names of Irish rugby and have also played in Europe. Thomond Park is the main rugby pitch in Limerick and the home of the Munster Rugby Team. Limerick is known as the spiritual home of Irish Rugby and if you are in Limerick between September and April you should visit Thomand Park and catch a Munster Rugby game.

Rugby really brought people together and created an excellent community spirit in the city when the Ireland rugby league was set up. No Limerick rugby supporter would dream of attending a game without singing 'There is an Isle' - or try to! Though no place names are actually referred to in the song, it is widely adopted as a 'Limerick' song, just like 'Limerick, you're a lady' .
